What is it?

Kuriko mochi is a Nakatsugawa sweet made by coating white rice mochi with crumbled kuri kinton chestnut paste. The soft chestnut coating and chewy white centre give it a different texture from cloth-shaped kuri kinton.

The name does not mean raw chestnut flour is mixed into the mochi. Maker descriptions show cooked chestnut paste sieved into coarse crumbs and applied to the outside.

History and local context

Ena Fukudo and Kuriya Nanyoken both make this regional sweet, with different recipes and sales conditions. Do not assume every version has only chestnut, sugar and rice: Ena Fukudo also lists salt and enzymes.

Checked on 1 October 2026: Ena Fukudo advertises its regular frozen product for September–February. Nanyoken’s six-piece listing gives 2–25 November 2026 and was not yet on sale. Check the exact product, not just a seasonal banner.

How to enjoy it

Cut small portions on a plate and take the mochi and chestnut crumbs together.

Before buying, distinguish shop collection from mail order and check shipment temperature, storage space and thawing instructions for the selected product.

Ena Fukudo’s frozen-product page contains conflicting two-day and three-day statements after thawing. Confirm with the shop and follow the actual package; this guide does not choose one as a universal safe period.

Use the seller’s instructions for thawing or reheating. Frozen shelf life and post-thaw shelf life are different, and another maker’s instructions may not apply.

Availability varies by maker, season, and destination.
