What is it?
Nakatsugawa kuri kinton is a small chestnut sweet from eastern Gifu. Cooked chestnut and sugar are shaped in a cloth; its defining texture is tender and crumbly.
It differs from the New Year dish with the same name. Kuriko mochi is another distinct sweet: crumbled chestnut paste coats a white rice mochi rather than being shaped alone.
History and local context
Nakatsugawa Tourism Association connects local chestnut sweets with home traditions of cooking and mashing mountain chestnuts. For a tasting, compare grain size, moisture and sweetness rather than choosing only by a famous shop name.
Nigiwai Tokusankan, beside JR Nakatsugawa Station, offers seasonal multi-maker kuri kinton tasting sets. Check current contents and availability before visiting. Sales periods also vary; Ena Fukudo describes its product season as September to March.
How to enjoy it
Break a piece in half to examine the grain, then taste small portions with the same drink when comparing makers.
