What is it?
Botchan dango aligns green, yellow and brown sweets on a short skewer. Matcha, yellow white-bean paste and azuki paste wrap a small mochi or gyuhi center, so the structure differs from ordinary hanami dango made of three colored rice-dough balls.
History and local context
The name links Matsuyama and Dogo to Natsume Soseki’s novel Botchan. Several makers sell this regional sweet; Utsuboya (うつぼ屋) and Tsuboya Kashiho (つぼや菓子舗) are different businesses.
As of 15 October 2026, Utsuboya’s eight-skewer box is not individually wrapped and has a stated unopened best-before period of 22 days from manufacture. Its ten-skewer box wraps each skewer separately and states 29 days from manufacture. These periods do not begin on purchase or delivery.
The same maker’s Hitokushi two-skewer pack contains two skewers in one wrapper and states 29 days from manufacture. For ten people receiving one skewer each, the ten separately wrapped skewers fit that plan; a two-skewer packet suits giving two together.
These three Utsuboya products use no egg for the yellow coloring, and their official labels state none of the 28 specified allergen ingredients. Other makers may use egg. Check the actual product and every confection in an assortment when allergies matter.
How to enjoy it
Remove the skewer and enjoy the bean-paste coating and small mochi or gyuhi center together with green tea.
Store these Utsuboya products away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity; eat promptly after opening. The 22- and 29-day periods do not apply after opening. Check the delivered package’s date against the day you plan to give it.
The chewy center can cause choking even when small. Take small bites and chew well, especially if swallowing is difficult; do not wash an unchewed piece down with tea.
