What is it?
Ehime chestnut taruto is a spiral castella roll filled with smooth yuzu-scented bean paste and chestnut. It is a rolled Japanese confection rather than a Western tart shell.
Hatada Kuri Taruto contains chopped chestnut; the same maker’s Onkuri Taruto (御栗タルト) arranges large whole chestnuts inside. Choose by the chestnut pieces, portion count, wrapping and the date you plan to serve it.
History and local context
Matsuyama taruto has a tradition linking it to a Nanban confection encountered in Nagasaki and adapted with bean paste. Several Ehime makers produce this regional style.
Hatada Kuri Taruto was introduced in 1975. Chopped chestnut gives small pieces throughout the yuzu paste, whereas Onkuri Taruto lines up large chestnuts for a more visible whole-chestnut centre.
As of 3 October 2026, the official shop lists a five-slice option for Kuri Taruto and a seven-slice option for Onkuri Taruto. A one-roll box of either is described as already sliced into eleven pieces. Match the portion count to your group and separately check individual wrapping if you need to hand out sealed pieces.
The maker lists both as regular products. Check shop stock before travelling. For another Matsuyama souvenir, Botchan Dango offers small three-colour filled skewers rather than a roll.
How to enjoy it
Serve a slice so the castella, yuzu paste and chestnut are eaten together. Use the same drink and small portions when comparing the chopped and whole-chestnut versions.
Unopened Hatada Kuri Taruto and Onkuri Taruto each have a stated best-before period of 45 days including the manufacturing day. This is not 45 days after purchase or delivery, and it does not apply to other makers, assorted boxes or opened packs. Follow the actual label.
For a gift, agree on the handover and eating dates, then confirm how much shelf life the delivered goods will have. Both listings describe room-temperature delivery, storage away from direct sun, heat and humidity, and prompt consumption after opening.
