In western Kagawa, brides traditionally distributed oiri around their new neighborhood. Today they also appear at other celebrations, in travel-gift jars and as colorful toppings on soft-serve ice cream.
History and local context
The custom is concentrated in the Seisan area, including Kanonji, Mitoyo, Zentsuji, Marugame and Sakaide. The name is commonly explained as a play on roasted food, o-iri-mono, and entering marriage, o-yome-iri.
Traditional production is laborious: glutinous rice is steamed and pounded, rolled, dried, cut into tiny pieces, rounded by hand, dried again and roasted until puffed.
How to enjoy it
Taste a few plain pieces first. Add them to ice cream or yogurt only at serving time so their fragile crunch survives.
Protect oiri from humidity and crushing. A rigid jar or box is better than a soft bag for travel.
