What is it?
Shoro manju is a Karatsu sweet: smooth red-bean paste is wrapped in an exceptionally thin sponge-cake skin and hand-baked into a sphere about 3 cm across. Its shape evokes shoro fungi growing beneath the pines of Nijinomatsubara.
Both Oohara and Miyata make versions in Karatsu. Oohara documents its 1850 founding and lineage, while the Karatsu Tourism Association states that Shoro Manju is a Miyata registered trademark; their histories and labels should not be conflated.
History and local context
Batter made from flour, sugar, and egg is applied around bean paste and turned in a heated mold, building a thin fragrant skin. Unlike a thick steamed manju, the interior is almost entirely smooth bean paste.
Oohara preserves a story in which an ancestor refined a baked manju and presented it to the Ogasawara lord, who associated it with the round fungus. This is the producer's inherited account, not proof that every Karatsu maker shares one lineage.
How to enjoy it
Cut one at room temperature to see the skin-to-filling ratio, then pair it with green tea, Ureshino tea, or unsweetened coffee. Shelf life varies by maker and oxygen-absorber packaging; check maker, production date, allergens, and current label.
