History and local context
The colloquial name combined baba, an affectionate dialect word for an older woman, with hera, the spatula used for serving. Vendors today vary, so that history should not be used as a label imposed on every present-day worker.
Shindo Reika describes local farm women selling ice in spare hours and its second generation adding parasols for shade. Kodama Reika traces its business to bicycle sales in 1948.
